Car & Van Rental in York?
York is the county town of Yorkshire – it was founded by the Romans as Eboracum in 71 A.D. and has remained steeped in history ever since. York has a population of 205,000, with just under 10 percent being students attending the University. The university, together with health care, are the biggest employers in the area. The 19th century saw the city become an important hub for the developing railway network and as a centre for confectionery; Rowntree and Terry’s both established chocolate factories there. Today, the city’s economy is built around service industries and tourism. Car hire is the perfect solution for anyone who wants to tour North Yorkshire. There are three Enterprise locations in the city; 15 Foss Island, at the railway station and on Monks Cross Drive, Huntington, three miles from the centre. You might be in York on business, or perhaps you are in York for a relaxing break – let's face it, no one can complain that there isn’t plenty to see and do, both in and around the city itself and further afield.
Our Rental Vehicles in York
You will be delighted with the vehicles Enterprise can offer you, including SUVs and people carriers. If you are looking for an economical car for short trips, then a Ford Focus, Vauxhall Corsa or Toyota Aygo should more than live up to your expectations. If your vehicle requirements demand both a little more room and power for longer runs, why not hire a Vauxhall Insignia, a Skoda Octavia or similar? Whatever you are looking for, Enterprise has something for you, at a price to suit your budget.
Attractions in York
From its ancient Gothic Minster, one of the finest Christian churches in the world, to modern attractions such as the Jorvik Centre, where visitors can experience the sights, sounds and smells of an ancient Viking street, York has something for everyone. The city is home to the National Railways Museum, a highly popular attraction that houses the Flying Scotsman and Mallard steam engines. Spend some quality time surveying the many exhibitions at the excellent York Castle Museum, incorporating York Castle Prison, or simply go for an exhilarating walk around the city walls. York has a great shopping centre, with high-class clothes shops for both men and women, the usual high-street names, and of course, lots of souvenirs shops. Should visitors want to do their shopping without the hustle and bustle of the city centre, McArthurGlen Designer Outlet is only a short distance from the city, in Fulford, and a good reason in itself to get behind the wheel.
Places to Go Outside York
You can reach an astonishing number of places easily from York, and visitors to the area without transport would be remiss not to book a car in York. Castle Howard, not really a castle at all but one of the country's finest stately homes, is situated 15 miles north of the city. The house was designed by Vanbrugh, and although it is occupied, some parts, including the magnificent grounds with their wandering peacocks, are open to the public. Visitors to Eden Camp in nearby Malton can have an immersive Second World War experience and discover for themselves what it was like during the Blitz. From York, you can drive to the North York Moors to experience the unsurpassable scenery. Stop off in Whitby and take a look at the harbour – the place where Dracula’s ship docked in the novel by Bram Stoker.
Airport Car Hire
York is served by Leeds Bradford Airport, some 31 miles from the city centre. Air passengers fly into York on a daily basis from all over the world. Hiring a car offers the perfect solution should you need to travel to the airport – just hire a car from Enterprise and persuade a friend to drop you off and collect you again. This way there is no wear and tear on your friend’s vehicle and you don't need to worry about airport parking charges. However, should you need to leave your car at Leeds Bradford Airport, there are short and medium-stay options, and long-stay secure parking away from the airport, accessible by regular shuttle bus.
Parking and Traffic
There are 15 car parks operated in and around the city by the City of York Council, together with numerous privately operated facilities, including NCP car parks in Piccadilly and Tanner Row. Additionally, there are six park-and-ride sites outside the city walls. The road network serving York is long established. The A19 that runs from Doncaster to Tyneside serves the city, along with the A64 between Leeds and Scarborough, the A1079 from Hull to York, and the Liverpool to York A59. Within 10 miles of the centre, there are links to the motorway networks, the A1 (M), M1 and M62. The outer ring road, sited about three miles from the perimeter of the city centre, provides access through the city for those who need it. The land around York is very flat and the city has a large number of cyclists, so do drive carefully and give the cyclists room.
